Let Us File Your Lawsuit

If you or a loved one has been injured due to Dilantin side effects such as cerebellar atrophy, you could be eligible to file a Dilantin lawsuit to pursue compensation for your losses.

Dilantin Effects

Did you or a loved one suffer from cerebellar atrophy after taking the epilepsy drug phenytoin, commonly known as Dilantin?

Studies show that the long-term use of Dilantin is linked to an increased risk of developing cerebellar atrophy, which is a shrinking of the cerebellum. It can affect movement, coordination, speech and memory.

Dilantin, generic phenytoin, is a commonly prescribed antiepileptic drug, used for treating those who suffer from epilepsy and seizures. Cerebellar toxicity is one of the most significant phenytoin side effects allegedly linked with the antiepileptic drug. Despite the decades of literature identifying the causal connection between the reaction and Dilantin (as well as Pfizer’s own internal safety signal analysis), there was no reference to cerebellar atrophy in the label until June 2016.

What is Cerebellar Atrophy?

Cerebellar atrophy is a focal cerebral atrophy marked by a degeneration of the cerebellum, which is the part of the brain that sits under the cerebrum, behind the brain stem. It is divided into two hemispheres. The cerebellum helps regulate voluntary movements such as posture, balance, coordination, and speech. It’s what allows for smooth, balanced and precise movement.

Cerebral atrophy (atrophy of the brain) occurs when brain tissue degenerates and loses neurons and the connections between them. Atrophy can be generalized, which means the entire brain has shrunk; or it can be focal, affecting only a certain area of the brain and decreasing the functions that area of the brain controls. Damage to the cerebellum results in a lack of balance, slow movements, tremors, which causes shaking, and unstable eye movements. It can make certain physical tasks difficult and unsteady. The symptoms of cerebellar atrophy are similar to a stroke.
